Humphrey B Bear-History And Collectables
Humphrey B Bear was one of the longest running children’s television programmes in Australia. Running for over 3,000 episodes, his image has been immortalised on countless toys and other products! Many of these are now collectable.
Humphrey Makes An Appearance
Humphrey, the honey-loving, accident-prone bear first appeared in his own show on 24th May, 1965, and only ceased production in 2009. He bears similarities to an Australian predecessor, Fredd Bear, who starred in Fredd Bear’s Breakfast A Go-Go in 1964. Later, Fredd and his female friend, Fee Fee were characters in the highly popular The Magic Circle Club (1965).
A Toy Is Born!
Consequently, the very first Humphrey B Bear soft toys look very similar to Fredd Bear. Made of a dark brown artificial silk plush, Humphrey had short stumpy legs, a bulging pot belly and a large head with small ears. Eyes were made of white vinyl with black plastic button ‘pupils’, whilst the nose was very large and black plastic. He wore a plastic yellow ‘boater’ hat, and tartan fabric (removable) waistcoat/vest. Difficult to find, these original Humphries are usually naked! Stuffing was crumbed rubber, packed firmly, and so, as the toys stood 45cm tall, they were quite heavy.
1969-Early 1990s.
Classic Toys P/L of Adelaide obtained the exclusive rights to produce Humphrey merchandise in 1969. Together with Southern Television Corp P/L (a subsidiary of News Ltd, and owner of Humphrey Bear through Channel 9, Adelaide), this company made most of the Humphrey memorabilia until the mid 1980s, when high costs forced production to be moved overseas. It also made Humphrey’s suits!
In the early 1990s, the partnership was dissolved, and the exclusive licence was lost.
Metti Toys manufactured rubber toys of Humphrey in the late 1960s. A 1968 version is incised ‘Metti Toys’. Standing 25cm tall, it has painted features.
Typically, in 1973, a plush Humphrey was made of short grey plush fabric with black and white plastic eyes glued on. With a black fabric nose and red felt tongue, he did not have paw pads. Clothing was sewn on-a yellow plastic boater and red plaid fabric waistcoat. The white vinyl collar with fabric tie was often removable.
Other products manufactured from the 1960s onwards included metal money boxes and lunch boxes, vinyl records, night
lights and books!
Early 1990s-2009.
Banksia Productions now ‘owned’ Humphrey. The range of merchandise produced now was extensive, including doona covers, ceramic money boxes and crockery, backpacks, CDs, and fabric! Humphrey soft toys have been made in sizes from 15cm to 90cm!
Banksia Productions owned the intellectual property rights and marketing rights to Humphrey B Bear until 2009, when, due to heavy debts, it went in insolvency. A dispute over the rights is still in the courts as various charity organisations fight for the use of Humphrey’s image to raise funds.
Everything New Is Not Old!
Quite a bit of confusion surrounds the age, and therefore the value, of ‘old’ Humphrey toys. Classic Toys used the same labels during all years of manufacture, and therefore 1990s toys are tagged the same way as 1960s Humphries. It is in the appearance that the toys can be dated. Newer Humphries are made of a fluffy longer-haired brown fur. Older ones are made from dark brown art silk plush, or short-pile grey plush, and are much more collectable!
Values
1965 plush Humphrey: $80-$150
1960s metal lunchbox: $30-$80
1973 plush Humphrey: $20-$50

Great nightime reading thankyou. x
The Humphrey bear looks very much like a plush toy I’ve seen quite a lot, in the US, but I don’t know if they were genuine Humphrey’s, or knock-offs.
Disney had a Humphrey Bear, too, but a different one altogether, dating from the early 1950s.
Thanks, Leylah!
It’s funny to think that quaint old Humphrey could have crossed the Pacific! I’d be interested to see the US look-alike ones! lol
Doc-thanks for the comment and the info!
Hi, I’m one of Humphrey’s biggest fans.
I have over 100 Humphrey toys including old ones, lamps, puppets etc..
I dont have a Wilbur Worm but would love to get one!!
It was a sad day when they axed Humphrey!!
Hi Jenny,
Yes-we miss Humphrey!
Your collection sounds great-the earlier Humphreys have lots of character!
I hope you find Wilbur!
I think my old Humphrey from childhood may be one of the earlier types. It has the plastic yellow boater, removable vest and type of eyes mentioned. Sadly his plastic nose has gone missing somewhere over the years…:(
I recall you could move the eye whites position to horizontal, this made Humphrey look rather evil.
Cheers
Crash
Hi Crash,
You may be able to find a poor old Humphrey and replace the nose on your one with his!
Funny to think that Humphrey can be evil too! lol
Thanks for your comment!
Hi. I enjoyed the article very much. I was particularly interested as i have Fredd bear and i have never seen another nor could even find out how many were in existence. I had received it as a child as Magic circle club was my favourite show. Cheers
Hi Coral,
We have seen Fredd at collectors’ fairs, but he is rare! Sometimes people don’t know they have one if he doesn’t have his clothes on.
About 10 years ago there was a set of Fredd and Fee fee on ebay that sold very competively for $150!
Hi i am reserching a childhood bear i have, we lived in Aussie when i was a baby for 2 years i was bought a bear which i have now owned for over 40 years which up till now i believed was Yogi Bear but i came across Humphrey Bear today on the internet now i am so confused – can anyone help please…. my bear is a dark brown very well stuffed has a red felt tongue soft black nose (my sisters one has the hard nose), he has a yellow hat and a green and red checked waistcoat and a white lapel around his neck with a red tie he is approx 18 inches in height, has the short legs and big belly.
any help is very much appreciated – many thanks
Hi Tanya, it certainly does sound as if your ‘Yogi’ is actually an earliest Humphrey! I wonder if you lived in Adelaide when you lived in Australia? More of the oldest ones tended to have been sold there. The date you received him also correlates as does his colour and clothing! The first Humphries were dark brown, made of short-pile artificial silk plush. If you are able to upload a picture here then we can tell you definitely if it is Humphrey.
Thanks!
Hi Jo, Ive got this Humphrey B Bear toy. Hes made of soft rubber plastic. Under his foot is engraved Metti Australia. Wondering if you can tell me anything about it.

Thanks
Hi Rose,
Your Humphrey is in great condition for his age! Metti made a range of Humphrey rubber toys in the late 1960s, including smaller versions of your one, night-lights and balls. His value on a site such as ebay would be around $20, up to $40 at a teddy bear fair or in an antique shop.
Thanks
Cool, thanks for that Jo
Think Ill just hang onto him for a little while longer, hes such a funny old fellow, and gets in all manner of strife, He leads a very exciting life, and honey’s his favourite fare,Which is hardly so very surprising, He’s a really amazing old bear,
Humphrey MY fun loving bear!
Hi there Jo,
I am from Metti Trading Australia and yes, we are still running with the second generation at the helm. While we do not manufacture dolls anymore we now manufacture toy balls and fitness balls under the brand Loumet. You are quite accurate with the information above on Classic Toys and Metti Australia.
Hi Joseph,
Thanks for your comment! It was great to hear from you! Humphrey is an iconic Australian character and it is sad that he isn’t currently on tv for this generation of children!
Best wishes!
I have a Humphrey B Bear watch and have been looking on ebay for a value and can’t find any. Written on it is Southern Television Corp 1965. Can you help with this? Kerry

Hi jo
i have researched further and i can tell you that the bear was definitely purchased in Aussie and we lived in Perth not sure if we visited any other areas whilst there, it would have been around 1969 that we got the bears i will get my hubby to down load a picture for you -it will just be nice to confirm my childhood teddy as i always believed him to be yogi! i am now 42 years old and its great to know where my buddy originated from especially as he has lived in England for the past 40 years!
Kind regards
Tanya
Hi Kerry,
Your watch is a rarer old Humphrey collectable! They are not often offered for sale, probably because they were damaged or broken over the years.
It is a great ‘find’ for collectors, and if it is still in working order would sell on ebay for $20-$40, or at a collectors’ fair for $40-$50.
Thanks for the picture!
Hi Tanya!
Looking forward to seeing the pic-that will tell us for sure if he is in fact Humphrey!
Thanks!
Hi

Humphrey B Bear was one of my childhood favourites!
Im 41 and have had humphrey along time.
Im not sure if he is one of the originals?
He was very well used and muchloved even to this day.
His body has stood the test of time well
His clothing is a little worn but otherwise l think he is complete!
Thanks Sandra
Hi Sandra,
Love your Humphrey!
Yes, he is one of the original ones! He would have been made in the late 1960s. They are quite rare to find, and even rarer to still have their clothes on! Often, people do not realize it is Humphrey if they are naked, because they look different to any of the other newer versions.
You have done well to keep him in such good condition-quite often the rubber stuffing has settled, and the features are scratched or stained.
His value would be around $100-$150 at a Collectors’ Fair!
Thanks for the picture!
Hi there,
I have a Humphrey doll the same as this one. The hat is made out of cane. You mentioned a ‘collector’s fair’. How do you find out where and when these are held? Are these the best places to sell items? Thanks for your help and your blog.
Anthony
Hi i have this humphrey bear and was just wondering if you could tell me if he is worth anything it belonged to my nephew and then got passed on to my daughter but humphrey had just about finished and she never took an interest in the toy.Thanking you kind regards.Debbie.

Hi Debbie,
He is a lovely Humphrey, and in good condition!
He appears to be from the 1980s, and so would sell at a Collectors’ Fair for $10-$20.
Thanks!
Hi Jo,
Do know of a bear called Cynthia who was made similar to Fredd and Fee Fee and Humphrey? She is made from the same fabric as Fredd and Fee Fee and stands about the same size with a black plastic nose with white painted nostrils.
Cynthia has the same eyes as Humphrey and has course eye lashes popping out from the top of the white vinyl eye surround, she also has a pink cloth bow attached to her head between her ears.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Kathy.
Hi Kathy,
Thanks for your query!
I have heard about ‘Cynthia’ in the past, but am attempting to locate more information about her! Do you have her in your collection? If so, would it be possible to upload a picture? It would be wonderful to see her!
I’ll post the information I collect about her shortly.
Thanks again
Hi again,
Unfortunately I could not locate a picture of Cynthia.
She was produced over a five year period, between 1965 and 1970 by the Sterne Doll Company, and looked similar to Humphrey, Fee Fee and Fredd Bear!
I’ll keep looking!
hi Jo. i just want to say that you have a fantastic site. i recently found a humphrey watch in an antique shop and paid $45 for it and was worried that it may have been too much. not that it mattered, as soon as i saw the tartan band sticking out from under about 40 other watches i knew what it was and that it was comming home with me. still has original band an works! i had one as i child and still wore it in high school until a “friend” stole it. brilliant site, great info. its good to see there are still fans about. thanks. robby
Hi Robby,
Thanks!
You did well finding a Humphrey watch in working order!
As you said, price didn’t matter to you as you were taking it home regardless, but you did get it for a fair price. It’s great that you could replace the one your ‘friend’ ran off with!
Thanks again!

Hi Leona,
Humphrey is a rarer big size, and is in great condition! He would date from around 1968-70, and would sell at a Collector’s Fair for $80-$100, though on ebay values tend to be lower, being around $50-$60.
Thanks
Hi… I have Humphrey. B. Bear with a tag on the side saying Southern TV corp 1965 & not the back saying Made in Malaysia for CLASSIC TOYS, ADELAIDE… I had someone enquireabout him & I was hoping you could give me an evaluation of approx what its worth?? Hi Tammy,

Your Humphreys are both collectable, especially the earlier one. The Classic bear dates from the 1970s and the Century Toys one, from the 1990s. (If you are able to post a photo that would be great, as the bears are readily identifiable by their ‘look’!) Assuming the 1970s Humphrey is about 35 cm and it very good condition, he would sell at a Collectors’ Fair for $30-$40. The larger bear is valued at about $25.
Also, I am putting together further articles about Humphrey, with additional photos and info, which will be published soon!
Hi,
I just bought an old Humphrey – I’ll try attach a photo. In case the photo doesn’t work – he has a plastic yellow hat, a green floral plastic bow tie and he’s tag reads “Classic Toys Pty Ltd, Made in Aust. 76, Foam filled, Southern TV Corp. Ltd 1965.
Can you tell me what year he’s from and what he might be worth.
I paid $16 at a local charity shop.
Thanks.
Kate
Hi Kate,
The older Humphreys are very collectable. Your Humphrey was made in 1976, and so is one of the older ones. Unfortunately your photo didn’t upload properly but provided he is in good condition, would sell at a collectors’ fair for about $40.(45cm size).
Thanks!
